Crete: forest fire in progress near Achlia - Central Macedonia: forest fire near Sithonia - Continued high fire risk in Greece, vigilance required

A forest fire broke out this July 2 around Achlia and Ierapetra in Crete, according to local media. The authorities have ordered the evacuation of residents from Agia Fotia, Achlia, Ferma and western Galini towards Ierapetra. At least 36 firefighters were mobilised to tackle the blaze, which is still not under control.

Earlier in the day, a fire also broke out in the Stomio, but it was quickly brought under control thanks to the intervention of firefighters.

In addition, another forest fire is burning in Sithonia (Central Macedonia region), after breaking out near a campsite in a forested area in Vourvourou. It is spreading rapidly due to the hot and windy conditions. Around 65 fire-fighters were mobilised to the scene. The authorities have issued evacuation orders for Livari and Vourvourou, advising residents of these areas to head for Nikiti.

Disruptions, particularly linked to road closures, traffic diversions and evacuation orders are to be anticipated.
