The Kenya Meteorological Department issued a supplementary statement on 21 May to its advisory of 20 May, warning of strong south-easterly winds that will impact the Kenyan and Tanzanian coast and advising small boats and craft to avoid open sea areas in anticipation of the passage of storm Laly.
The Tanzanian Meteorological Authority warned on 20 May that Cyclone Laly was strengthening from a moderate to severe storm.
The weather system is to the north-west of Madagascar after passing close to the Seychelles between 16 and 18 May. It is scheduled to continue northwest towards the southern coast of Somalia.
The two meteorological services are expecting heavy rainfall, particularly over the highlands of central and western Kenya. Agencies such as the Kenya Red Cross have been raising awareness via radio and forums, on the ground.
These storm warnings follow on from Cyclone Hidaya. The expected heavy rainfall could lead to further flooding and major disruptions (see our previous warnings).
